ANNAPOLIS – Navy will likely be down both of its starting outside linebackers when it visits No. 10 South Carolina on Saturday.
Senior Jarred Shannon is expected to miss his second straight game with a shoulder injury, while Mason Graham (knee) could also sit out after suffering an injury Saturday at Western Kentucky.
“Jarred probably won’t be able to go,” coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “Probably will be a miracle if Mason is ready to go, too.”
Brye French is listed as a co-starter at Graham’s position. Keegan Wetzel, who suffered a concussion Saturday and watched practice Monday and Tuesday, got the nod for Shannon next week and could do so again at South Carolina.
“We expect Keegan to be back, though,” Niumatalolo said. “He played the rest of the game. He had to have some cognitive skills or else coach [Buddy] Green would have been yelling at him for the entire three and a half quarters he played.”
Niumatalolo said reserve inside linebacker Caleb King received work Wednesday at outside linebacker in anticipation of being short-handed Saturday. There’s also the possibility Navy relies heavily on fifth defensive back Tra’ves Bush, who played more than 40 snaps in both of the Mids’ first two games, against the Gamecocks.
