Three more Terp true freshmen expected to play Saturday

Maryland used five true freshmen in September. Expect three more to play in the Terrapins’ first game in October.

Coach Randy Edsall said wide receiver Tyrek Cheeseboro, linebacker Cole Farrand and defensive back A.J. Hendy will all play Saturday when the Terrapins play host to Towson.

“Tyrek Cheeseboro, he’s going to be playing this week on special teams,” Edsall said. “He’s going to be playing. The way he goes out and practices and he practices with energy, he’s got enthusiasm, he’s sprinting down there, we can’t even block him on our people. I told him today – I brought him in, I brought Hendy in, I brought Cole Farrand and Alex Twine and told them ‘You guys are going to be starting on some special teams this week, because I see some things out of them that I don’t see out of other guys.”

Farrand (middle linebacker) and Hendy (safety) are both listed as second-stringers on defense.

Maryland used defensive end Keith Bowers, fullback Tyler Cierski, wideout Marcus Leak, tailback Justus Pickett and Twine in the first three games.

Edsall said his willingness to play three more true freshmen runs counter to the possibility he views Maryland as a rebuilding project, a subject broached by a reporter a few minutes before Edsall discussed the freshmen. After providing a response to the question on rebuilding, Edsall did not use the word “rebuilding” in later answers.

“If I was saying it was that kind of what he’s saying, then I’d take these kids and I wouldn’t play them,” Edsall said. “But that’s not what I’m looking to do.”
