Terps' Hampton set for first start --- on defense

← return to D1SCOURSE

There aren’t many subplots surrounding Maryland football this week that have little to do with picking up the pieces from Saturday’s 38-7 loss to Temple.

Maurice Hampton’s first defensive start stems in part from his five-tackle outing against the Owls. But it has much more to do with how the fifth-year senior received a new lease on his career with the arrival of a new coaching staff.

That will all get delved into later in the week, but Hampton is curious in the sense he actually started one game on offense. He got a nod at left guard against Rutgers in 2009 while Maryland was juggling different lines on a weekly basis.

(No, seriously, Maryland used seven starting combinations in 12 games that season. Nine different offensive linemen got one start).

Anyway, Hampton moved to defense during the spring of 2010 and has now earned his first defensive start. He’ll become the fourth Maryland player in the last 15 seasons to notch a start on both sides of the ball during his career when the Terrapins play Towson on Saturday.

The full list? Figured that might be of some interest:

PlayerPositions
YearsOff. Starts
Def. Starts
Randall Jones
QB/S1998-01417
Ricardo Dickerson
LB/FB2002-0551
Jack Griffin
DT/G2004-08
68

It’s quite the eclectic list. Jones started four games at quarterback as a freshman before switching to defense (aside from a turn as a handoff machine for LaMont Jordan in the 1999 finale).

Dickerson made one start at strong-side linebacker in 2002 (against Georgia Tech) before resurfacing at fullback three years later.

And Griffin took a redshirt year in the middle of his career (2006) while converting to the offensive line. He made four starts during Maryland’s injury-riddled 2007 season, then got the nod in the opener and the bowl game as a fifth-year senior in 2008.

By the weekend, Hampton – who will fill in for redshirt freshman Andre Monroe – will be on the list as well.
