Some bits and pieces before a little analysis on the subject …

* Maryland coach Randy Edsall said linebacker Darin Drakeford (ankle) and defensive tackle Andre Monroe (ankle) are both definitely out for Saturday’s game against Towson.

* Long-term injury update No. 1: Defensive lineman Justin Anderson, who suffered a foot injury during the first week of practice, has started to do some running.

* Long-term injury update No. 2: Offensive tackle Justin Gilbert apparently won’t be back for a few more games. “I don’t think we’ll see him maybe until the end of October, beginning of November,” Edsall said.

OK, then. That’s a fair number of injuries to be tracking at this point in the season. Toss in season-ending shoulder surgeries for Matt Robinson and Dave Stinebaugh and the long-term injury for Isaiah Ross, and someone is surely making a mint off performing MRI exams on Maryland football players.

Again.

Loyal readers of any version of this blog might recall a look at Maryland’s injury issues from a longer-term vantage point. You can click here for a post that didn’t really answer the question in its headline, or you just look at the year-by-year list of man-games lost by scholarship players from that post that’s updated below:

The numbers are modest for now, but they bear monitoring. Maryland will be without at least seven players against Towson (Anderson, Drakeford, Gilbert, Monroe, Robinson, Ross and Stinebaugh), and there’s already some guys who will add another 10 games or so to the total by season’s end. The last thing a team in transition of some sort needs is a pile of injuries to deal with as well.
