Maryland is scrapping the usual format for its spring game to go with an offense vs. defense scoring system on Saturday afternoon:
OFFENSE
* 6 points: Touchdown
* 3 points: Field goal
* 2 points: Run of 15+ yards
* 2 points: Pass of 20+ yards
* 1 point: First down
* 1 or 2 point: Conversion
DEFENSE
* 6 points: Touchdown
* 5 points: Turnover
* 3 points: Three-and-out, blocked field goal
* 2 points: Stopped drive, sack, tackle for loss
* 1-2 points: Conversion
Out of curiosity, I went back and looked at the last two spring games at Byrd to figure out what sorts of point totals might get tossed up in a typical spring game (would have gone back an extra year, but the full box score for the 2009 game wasn’t posted) …
2011
Offense: 76 (5 touchdowns, 5 conversions, 2 15+ runs, 6 20+ passes, 25 first downs)
Defense: 80 (1 touchdown, 1 conversion, 4 turnovers, 9 three-and-outs, 4 additional stopped drives, 7 sacks, 2 additional TFL
2010
Offense: 81 (4 touchdowns, 4 conversions, 2 field goals, 3 15+ runs, 5 20+ passes, 29 first downs)
Defense: 40 (4 turnovers, 2 three-and-outs, 4 additional stopped drives, 1 sack, 2 additional TFL)
Guess that means there’s no threat of a 13-7 score being tossed up on Saturday – at least in Maryland’s scoring system for the day.
