Navy kicker situation remains uncertain

ANNAPOLIS – The biggest cheer at Navy’s scrimmage inside Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday was not reserved for a touchdown run.

Or a nifty scramble.

Or a forced turnover.

Instead, it was directed toward kicker Brynmor Hughes, who made a 47-yard field goal … after he and his teammates combined for six misses from the distance.

Overall, the Midshipmen were 9-for-20 on field goals during the scrimmage, and none of the five kickers fared better than 2-for-4 (though each made an extra point as well).

In attempts beyond 30 yards, the Mids were just 4-for-15:

Needless to say, the biggest question looming over the Mids is no closer to being solved with the season opener against Notre Dame just three weeks away.

“We got to keep kicking,” coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “We’ll continue to kick those guys every day. It was good to come kick those guys out here because  they’ve been kicking a lot better at the academy, but there’s nobody watching. Unfortunately, there’s going to be people watching when we play, so this was good for them. We just  have to keep working.”
