Georgetown fills lacrosse vacancy with Maryland assistant Warne

Georgetown hired Maryland assistant Kevin Warne as its new men’s lacrosse coach.

Warne replaces Dave Urick, who retired last month after 23 seasons.

The Hoyas’ month-long search eventually settled on Warne, who coordinated the defenses for the national runner-up for the last two seasons. He previously worked with Maryland coach John Tillman at Harvard from 2008 to 2010, and was also an assistant at Delaware and UMBC.

Warne inherited a veteran defense at Maryland, with three seniors on close defense and another at long pole in 2011. Despite significant losses, the Terps ranked ninth nationally in scoring defense (7.94) last season.

More to come later in the day.
