New Maryland baseball coach John Szefc will earn a base salary of $115,000 annually over the course of his five-year contract with the school.

A copy of Szefc’s contract was obtained through an open records request. Szefc, a former head coach at Marist who came to Maryland last month after a stint as an assistant at Kansas State, also receives $20,000 in moving expenses as part of the deal he signed Aug. 9. Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson signed the contract Aug. 13.

Szefc’s base salary is an increase over the $100,000 Erik Bakich received annually during his three-year stint at Maryland. Bakich left to take over Michigan’s program in June with one year remaining on his deal.

The contract also includes annual stipends for a car ($4,200) and cell phone stipend ($840), as well as bonuses related to the ACC tournament, NCAA tournament, ACC and national coach of the year honors and a bonus earned if the baseball program’s Academic Progress Rate score is at least 950 out of 1000.

Bakich had similar, though not identical, bonuses in his deal.

Szefc takes over a team that produced the second-best victory total in school history while going 32-24 last season. Maryland has not reached the ACC tournament since 2005 and the NCAA tournament since 1971.
