It’s premature to say Navy’s kicking situation is solved.

After all, no one on the roster has attempted an extra point or a field goal in a game. That’s unchanged for when camp started earlier this month.

But Navy’s going with freshman Nick Sloan as its starter against Notre Dame on Sept. 1, with Austin Grebe as the backup.

Both will travel to Ireland for the opener.

“They’re coming,” coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “We have a big enough plane.”

Colin Amerau will handle kickoffs for the Midshipmen. Toss in punter Pablo Beltran, and Navy will travel at least four specialists.

“Now with the ball being on the 35, that’s a huge advantage being able to kick that in the end zone and let someone start at the 25,” Niumatalolo said. “That position becomes a valuable spot.”
