Charles Mitchell and Maryland's 19-and-14 Club

Probably the most eye-catching numbers from Maryland’s 79-50 defeat of Delaware State on Saturday was freshman forward Charles Mitchell’s 19 points and 14 rebounds.

He’s only the 10th Maryland player to reach both figures in a game since Joe Smith departed school after the 1994-95 season. Smith had six such games in his final 15 college contests; no Terp since has had more than five for a career.

He’s also the first player since Jordan Williams to toss up 19 and 14 in a game, and only the second freshman (along with Williams) in the post-Smith era to produce such a performance.

One name that didn’t pop up that was a bit of a surprise was Obinna Ekezie. One individual game that seemed like it could appear was James Gist’s 31-point night at Wake Forest in 2008; it turns out he had “only” 11 rebounds in a thoroughly dominant performance in the Dash.
