From Maryland’s exhibition game to its opener against Kentucky to Monday’s 67-45 defeat of Morehead State, forward Jake Layman has showed a steady progression.

The latest step was a seven-point effort on 3-for-6 shooting, part of the Terrapins’ balanced effort while winning their home opener.

“Jake’s a good player,” coach Mark Turgeon said. “There’s a reason he was rated so high and recruited so hard. If I can just get him to get a haircut. It’s supposed to happen tomorrow. We’ll see.”

Layman’s flowing locks, of course, have made him maybe the easiest player on Maryland’s roster to identify from the other end of the floor (well, besides 7-foot-1 Alex Len, of course).

So will all of it go?

“Just a haircut,” Layman promised.

It turns out the hair has gotten so long that it’s gotten in the freshman’s eyes at time. Even being exceptionally (and enviably) well-coiffed, it turns out, has its price.
