The Washington Times - September 19, 2011, 07:17PM

As I point out in my latest column, Tim Hightower (106) and his Plan B, Roy Helu (112), both had 100 yards from scrimmage Sunday in the Redskins’ cliffhanger win over the Cardinals – “just the fourth time in the last 25 seasons that two Washington backs have had 100 yards from scrimmage in the same game.”

Not bad, especially when you consider it was only their second game with the club. Here’s the company they keep:

SEE RELATED:

● Sept. 18, 2011 vs. Cardinals – Helu 112 (74 rushing, 38 receiving), Hightower 106 (96, 10). Redskins won, 22-21.

Sept. 24, 2006 vs. Texans – Clinton Portis 164 (86, 78), Ladell Betts 151 (124, 27). Redskins won, 31-15.

Dec. 4, 2005 vs. Rams – Portis 137 (136, 1), Rock Cartwright 118 (118, 0). Redskins won, 24-9.

Dec. 22, 2002 vs. Texans – Betts 116 (116, 0), Kenny Watson 112 (110, 2). Redskins won, 26-10.

As you can see, the Redskins are 4-0 in these games.

Now, for the sheer nostalgia of it, here are the other Redskins backfield tandems that have accomplished the feat since the 1970 merger:

● Sept. 7, 1986 vs. Eagles – Kelvin Bryant 112 (36, 76), George Rogers 104 (104, 0). Redskins won, 41-14.

● Nov. 3, 1985 vs. Falcons – Keith Griffin 172 (164, 8), Rogers 124 (124, 0). Redskins won, 44-10.

● Oct. 17, 1983 vs. Packers – Joe Washington 137 (80, 57), John Riggins 107 (98, 9). Redskins lost 48-47.

● Dec. 7, 1980 vs. Chargers – Clarence Harmon 189 (71, 118), Wilbur Jackson 130 (46, 84). Redskins won, 40-17.

● Oct. 13, 1980 vs. Broncos – Jackson 122 (104, 18), Harmon 105 (52, 53). Redskins lost, 20-17.

● Dec. 2, 1979 vs. Packers – Riggins 122 (88, 34), Harmon 107 (34, 73). Redskins won, 38-21.

● Oct. 2, 1977 vs. Cardinals – Riggins 117 (47, 70), Mike Thomas 115 (88, 27). Redskins won, 24-14.

● Dec. 12, 1976 vs. Cowboys – Thomas 155 (66, 89), Riggins 112 (95, 17). Redskins won, 27-14.

● Sept. 19, 1976 vs. Seahawks – Thomas 159 (143, 16), Riggins 111 (71, 40). Redskins won, 31-7. (Note: Seattle was quarterbacked by a fellow named Jim Zorn.)

● Nov. 15, 1970 vs. Giants – Larry Brown 138 (62, 76), Charlie Harraway 109 (88, 21). Redskins won, 35-33.

● Nov. 8, 1970 vs. Vikings – Brown 118 (80, 38), Harraway 105 (75, 30). Redskins lost, 19-10.

That’s right, Brown and Harraway did it in consecutive weeks. Something else for the 2-H Club to shoot for.
