Saturday

Almost forgot: The last time #Kentucky and #Louisville were in #FinalFour together (1975), Kevin Grevey was #Wildcats‘ big star. #Wizards

Grevey had 34 points in #Kentucky’s championship game loss to#UCLA. It was the last of John Wooden’s 10 NCAA titles. #NCAATourney #Wizards

Here’s the box of that ‘75 final between #Kentucky and #UCLA, in case you want to reminisce. http://es.pn/H9KcS9 #NCAATourney#Wizards

What I remember most about that ‘75 #FinalFour is #UCLA, w/ seconds left in OT vs. #Louisville in the semis, fouling a guy who hadn’t …

… missed a FT all season, + he missed front end of a 1-and-1. #UCLA’s Richard Washington then won it with a buzzer-beater. #Louisville

What’s interesting about that ‘75 #NCAATourney is that Scott May’s injury probably cost #Indiana the title, just as Fab Melo’s …

… late ineligibility crippled #Syracuse’s chances this year. #NCAATourney #Indiana

Love to hear the appeal of Sean Payton’s suspension, the arguments/rationalizations he’d use. Too bad #NFL Network can’t cover it. #Saints

His recent arrest for burglary has reminded me of the wonder that was Ryan Leaf. 1998 stats: 2 TD passes, 15 INT… . #Chargers #NFL

… Only one other QB since 1950 has put up numbers like that: Jim Ninowski with the ‘60 #Lions (2 TD/18 INT). #Chargers #NFL

… Still, you’ve got to admire Marty Domres’ performance with the ‘74 #Colts: 0 TD, 12 INT. Fortunately, he had a #Columbia degree. #NFL

For those wondering: Has an #NFL QB ever thrown more INTs than completions in a season (minimum: 25 attempts)? The answer is: Sure… .

… The #Eagles‘ Don Jackson did it in 1936 (7 of 35 passing, 11 INT). Jim Musick of ‘33 Boston #Redskins also did it (11/36, 14 INT). #NFL

And Jackson and Musick aren’t the only ones. Other QBs in the early years also threw more INTS than completions in a season. #Redskins #NFL

Sunday

I’d say Matt Hendricks is the #Caps‘ version of Dusty Rhodes in the 1954 World Series, but nobody’d know what the heck I was talking about.

If #AndrewLuck and #RG3 are the first 2 picks in the #NFL draft, it’ll be the 6th time QBs have gone 1-2. The others are: #Redskins#Colts

1999: Tim Couch, #Browns (1), Donovan McNabb, #Eagles (2). 1998: Peyton Manning, #Colts (1), Ryan Leaf, #Chargers (2)… . #NFL#Redskins

1993: Drew Bledsoe, #Pats (1), Rick Mirer, #Seahawks (2). 1971: Jim Plunkett, Pats (1), Archie Manning, #Saints (2)… . #NFL #Redskins

1954: Bobby Garrett, #Browns (1), Lamar McHan, #Cardinals (2). #NFL #Redskins #Colts

Monday

In his baseball quiz, @georgefwill said Tim McCarver was only catcher to lead league in triples. What about Pudge Fisk in ‘72? #RedSox #MLB

When Pudge won ROY in ‘72 he had 9 three-baggers. Tied Joe Rudi for AL lead. Or do ties not count, @georgefwill#RedSox #MLB

And Fisk had 136 fewer at bats than Rudi (457 vs. 593). What say you, @georgefwill#RedSox #MLB

Goodell says rulings on #Saints‘ appeals likely by end of week. Would be sooner, but line to #NFL’s shredder is backed up. #bountygate

File Steele Stanwick (the star laxman from #Virginia) under: Great Names in Sports History. Straight out of F. Scott Fitzgerald. #UVA

Since their backs were put to the wall by #Sabres#Caps have tempted the fates by giving up 4 goals (1 EN) in last 3:10 of regulation. #NHL

You can’t keep doing that and not have it cost you. Tonight the #Lightning made the #Caps pay. #NHL

The #Jets returning to “Hard Knocks” would be like Bobby Ewing reappearing in the shower. Say it ain’t so. #NFL #HBO #Dallas

The answer is: #OklahomaState#FloridaState#Maryland#NotreDame and #Vanderbilt. What’s the question? #FinalFour#NCAATournament #Terps

What are the last five schools that could say: “We were the last team to beat the #NCAA men’s basketball champs?” #Terps  #NCAATournament

One more question: If John Calipari finished his coaching career at #Kentucky, would the #Wildcats break #UCLA’s record of 11 titles?

#Kentucky won No. 8 tonight — and Calipari just turned 53. I’d say yes. Know why? Because Wooden didn’t win his 1st until he was 53. #UCLA

The 17 rebounds by Thomas Robinson tonight were the most in the #NCAA title game since who had how many? #Kansas #Jayhawks  #FinalFour

Answer: Since #KU’s Nick Collison had 21 in an 81-78 loss to #Syracuse in 2003. The box: http://es.pn/HGhXdg #Kansas #Jayhawks #FinalFour

Tuesday

At #Nationals Park for the exhibition closer vs. the #RedSox. We’ll know in a few weeks if I eluded all the speed cameras en route. #MLB

Nice crowd at #Nationals Park for the exhibition vs. #RedSox. I believe this is what Al Pacino called, in “Ocean’s 13,” a “soft opening.”

I almost forgot. Not only is this the start of the baseball season, it’s also the start of the Wonderlic season. #NFL #Nationals #MLB #LSU

I like to think of Dustin Pedroia as Rabbit Maranville with power. After all, who’s gonna argue with me — other than Teddy Roosevelt? #Nats

Hope somebody keeps splits for Jayson Werth this season based on beard length. Love to know how it impacts his hitting, if at all. #Nats

One of these years, I expect to open the #Nats‘ media guide and, on Werth’s page, see no face, just a forest of hair. #MLB #Phillies

In the all-time ratings of hitters at http://baseball-reference.com, Nady is 1,617th + Ducky Schofield, Werth’s granddad, is 1,618th. #Nats

Now we know where the Darn in Darnell McDonald comes from. He just lined out to third with the go-ahead run on second. #Nats#RedSox

7-7, bottom of the 8th. Will this exhibition be played to its conclusion, or will Teddy + Abe settle it with a game of Home Run Derby? #Nats

Wednesday

It’ll be months before my book on the #NFL’s early years is available. Just thought I’d give ya a sneak peek. http://amzn.to/HlPG98 #Redskins

Uniform stories (e.g. the #NFL’s new #Nike duds) are uniformly boring. This ain’t “Project Runway,” people. It’s the N-F-L. #Redskins

Best Things About Chicago, No. 748: The popcorn at Nuts on Clark at Midway Airport. (I’m here for the #Nats‘ opener at Wrigley tomorrow.)

Being in the Windy City gave me this thought: If Upton Sinclair were alive today, would he be writing about #NFL concussions? #TheJungle

Little-known fact: Sinclair, the famed muckraker, is buried in D.C.’s Rock Creek Cemetery (along with Henry Adams and Robert Prosky). #Nats

What John Lannan is really saying is: You mean there’s room in the majors for 49-year-old Jamie Moyer, but there isn’t room for me? #Nats

What Lannan is also saying is: Moyer has batting gloves that are older than me. And I’m supposed to go down and pitch in Triple-A? #Nats

Remember the Siege of Bastogne, when the Germans asked the Americans if they wanted to surrender, and General McAuliffe said, “NUTS!” #Nats

Well, by asking for a trade, Lannan just told the #Nats, “NUTS!”

Did Lannan get screwed over? Sorta. He’s an average pitcher, not a Triple-A one. But the #Nats gave him 128 chances to not be average.

Watching the #Lakers play a “road” game vs. the #Clippers. Always a pleasure. But, hey, with gas over 4 bucks a gallon … #NBA

FYI: #MLB ballparks are expected to sell 20.5 million hot dogs this year, which, by my math, translates into 465,000 angioplastys. #Nats

Thursday

Went past a store on the way to Wrigley Field today. Sign in the window said: “Books: Rare, Medium, Well Done.” http://bit.ly/HkJ6lV #Nats

Well, I can now say I’ve covered an opener at Fenway Park and an opener at Wrigley Field. That’s gotta count for something, right? #Nats

Strasburg at 14 pitches through two innings, a 63-pitch pace. Fewest in a CG since ‘90 is 74 (Aaron Cook ‘07, Carlos Silva ‘05). #Nats

If the #Cubs keep swinging this early in the count, Bill Murray might be the only person in a Chicago jersey to cross home plate today. #Nats

Strasburg has been a veritable sawmill on the mound. Breaking bats left and right. #Nats

Adam LaRoche looks like a guy who spent most of the spring batting against minor-league pitching — when he batted at all. 3 Ks. #Nats

Instead of scoring that Baker bouncer a hit, they should have scored it “an error, but with no admission of guilt by the shortstop.” #Nats

For those wondering: Does a pitcher (e.g. Strasburg) ice after pitching in 40 degree temperatures with 18 mph wind? The answer is yes. #Nats
