David Steckel, Brooks Laich and Alex Oveckhin are named “Stars of the Game,” and it’s hard to argue with those selections.
A look at the stats for the third period reveals that it was only a matter of time before the Caps would punch one through to take the lead. Laich did that with about 4:30 left, and Ovechkin followed up with his second goal, once again earning some “MVP!” chants from the crowd. I have to check this, but I am hearing that Ovechkin had never scored on Khabibulin before this game. (The Blackhawks shut out the Caps on March 19 last season.)
The Caps outshot the Blackhawks 16-5 in the third period of this one, and had 34 shots on goal compared to 21 for Chicago. They had 14 takeaways compared to just 4 for the Blackhawks.
