Second period thoughts

Two more tallies has the Caps in control through two periods at Verizon Center. Chris Clark scored on a wraparound attempt to make it 2-0. His first shot hit the right post but he collected the rebound and stuffed it home. Nicklas Backstrom made it 3-0. Just after Brooks Laich left the penalty box, he put a shot on net from near the right wall and Backstrom encoutered no resistance as he cut to the net to whack home the rebound. The Flyers were clearly caught at the end of a shift and out of gas.

Other thoughts:

*Jose Theodore was very sharp in the second period, including making a save on a shot that looked eerily, eerily similar to the one Mike Knuble put in to win Game 7 last year. Theodore had a read on it though, and kicked his leg out to turn the rebound aside.

*Riley Cote basically jumped Donald Brashear to coax him into fighting right after Clark’s goal. It was probably a draw.

*Scott Hartnell cross-checked Mike Green behind the play, which drew a penalty. Daniel Briere clipped Shaone Morrisonn with a high stick behind the play. Some things never change.
