Just got off the phone with Bruce Boudreau and here’s what he had to say about today’s cuts:
Q: WAS THIS TOUGH FOR YOU?
BOUDREAU: It was tough because I respect all three of those guys so much. Chris the most because I have been around him for four years. Quintin because we called him up last year and he sacrificed his body so many times for the team, and we just felt this was the best move for Karl at this time.
Q: DID YOU TELL KARL IT WAS ABOUT MORE DEVELOPMENT TIME OR DID YOU SAY, ‘HEY, YOU MADE THE TEAM BUT THIS IS A SALARY CAP THING’?
BOUDREAU: That never came up. We think this formula has worked for Mike Green and Jeff Schultz. They learned a lot during their time in Hershey no matter how long or short they were there. Plus we have six bona fide NHL defensemen right now. Karl’s going to go down there and play 25-27 minutes a night.
Q: WHAT ABOUT CHRIS BOURQUE? YOU’VE SAID HOW MUCH YOU LIKE HIM…
BOUDREAU: He’s a good teammate, and he did do as much as he could. When there might been have been any small doubt about Chris and his ability, we now know he can play in the NHL. There’s just no room. We have 14 NHL forwards, so there is just no room for him right now.
