Gustafsson, Dovgan updates

*GM George McPhee said Anton Gustafsson’s back was the reason he wasn’t on the ice. Neither he nor coach Bruce Boudreau seemed too concerned, but neither said for certain he would be back tomorrow.

*Yesterday Viktor Dovgan said he had an agreement with the organization to go back to Russia for a year before returning to North America for this season. That didn’t seem to jive with what was said last season, and McPhee said today he knew of no such agreement. It is situations like Dovgan’s that have made many teams hesitant about taking Russians in the draft, but the Caps appear to be unphased (more about that in the paper tomorrow).

*Alex Ovechkin spoke to the media for a few minutes after skating with the rookies. Not a lot of new to report there, other than he said he’s at the same weight he was before last season.

*Nicklas Backstrom is here and was walking around without a limp. Both he and McPhee said the ankle was better, but nothing about whether or not he’ll be ready for the first practice.
