About an hour after the day’s scrimmage was over (and roughly 28 hours before they open the preseason) the Caps put out a release detailing a few roster moves. They also released the list of possible players for Wednesday night’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh.
First, the moves: Joel Broda, Stefan Della Rovere, Dmitry Kugryshev, Brett Leffler, Eric Mestery and Justin Taylor were sent back to their junior teams, leaving 21 defensemen, 32 forwards and six goalies on the roster. None of these are terribly surprising, and with Hershey’s camp opening Friday there will be fewer bodies at Kettler when the weekend rolls around.
Now, what you’ve all been waiting for, the roster (28 players, five or six of which won’t play or won’t travel) for the Caps’ first preseason game:
Goalies: Brent Johnson, Simeon Varlamov, Daren Machensey
Defensemen: Milan Jurcina, Shaone Morrisonn, Jakub Cutta, Sami Lepisto, Karl Alzner, Jeff Schultz, Josh Godfrey, John Carlson
Forwards: Matt Bradley, Tomas Fleischmann, Eric Fehr, Keith Aucoin, Brooks Laich, Viktor Kozlov, Alexandre Giroux, David Steckel, Oskar Osala, Quintin Laing, Chris Bourque, Andrew Joudrey, Andrew Gordon, Travis Morin, Jay Beagle, Mathieu Perreault, Michael Nylander.
Interestingly, Mike Green and rookie Karl Alzner were paired up during most of the Team C drills Tuesday morning. Bruce Boudreau said that was done because they were going to play together at home against Carolina on Thursday night. He is on the roster to travel to Carolina, so he could make his debut Wednesday night. More on Alzner in Wednesday’s paper.
