The Caps sent Keith Aucoin to Hershey and Jakub Cutta was released to get the roster down to 29 players (16 forwards, 10 defensemen and three goaltenders). Aucoin could see some time with the Caps this season as an injury call-up, but he might also have picked the wrong organization this offseason considering the depth at forward. Bruce Boudreau said he wanted to give Cutta a fair chance to make the big club since he was giving up salary in Europe to be in camp, but he was never really able to stand out during the exhibition games.
Of the 29, Grant McNeil, Tyler Sloan and Simeon Varlamov are almost certain to heading to Hershey soon, which would leave the team with 26. Barring injury, that leaves Quintin Laing and Chris Bourque trying to push someone else out up front and Karl Alzner and Sami Lepisto either fighting for one spot or forcing someone else out who’s back from last year.
Simeon Varlamov and Viktor Kozlov did not skate today. Both have groin issues, but supposedly neither is serious. Nicklas Backstrom was on the ice, and he said afterwards that his ankle didn’t feel worse today after waking up. As for his play, Backstrom said it felt like his first game, and he could probably use a couple more game situations to be completely ready for the season opener.
