UPDATE: John Erskine appears to be the odd man out on defense for tonight’s game against Buffalo. Bruce Boudreau said he thought Erskine played well against the Islanders, but he is sticking to his plan of rotating guys and getting Brian Pothier as many games as he can before the playoffs. He said he told the blueline corps two weeks ago of this plan and his intention to stick to it.

Boudreau said there is a “good chance” Simeon Varlamov will start tonight against the Sabres — a team that he said is as good as any of the eight playoff teams when fully healthy. Buffalo’s chances of making the playoffs are slim and would basically be non-existent if the Sabres don’t win tonight.

Boudreau’s explination for the “19-91 swap” again was that is seems like a good fit and it worked in the playoffs last year. He also mentioned “a defensive component.” The Ovechkin-Backstrom tandem has been on the ice for a lot of goals against recently.

As for Backstrom and Semin having chemistry: “I think Nick with anybody is good chemistry. He’s such a good passer and he makes everyone else better.” Agreed.
