The Washington Capitals have confirmed a report that the 2-month-old son of goalie Jose Theodore has died. The cause of death has not been confirmed.
“We are aware of the heartbreaking news,” Caps general manager George McPhee said in a statement released by the team. “At this time we ask that everyone respects the privacy of Jose and his family.”
Theodore and his wife, Stephanie Cloutier, also have a 3-year-old daughter named Romy.
Theodore, who will turn 33 next month, signed a two-year, $9 million deal with the Caps in the summer of 2008. Though he struggled at times last season, Caps coach Bruce Boudreau recently reaffirmed his standing with the team, calling him “the No. 1 guy.”
