The Caps have claimed defenseman Staffan Kronwall off re-entry waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Kronwall is a 26-year-old Swedish defenseman who was a ninth-round pick in the 2002 draft by Toronto. He has played 52 games in the NHL — 34 in 2005-06 and 18 in 2006-07 — and has zero goals and one assist to his credit.

This season he has seven goals and 25 points in 42 games for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. To make a spot on the roster for Kronwall, the Caps will put Brent Johnson on IR (presumably on LTIR). By claiming him on re-entry waivers, the Caps only have to pay half of his salary.

Kronwall signed a two-year deal worth up to $475,000 last year and $500,000 this season with the Leafs in June of 2007.
