Ovechkin ready to return?

Alex Ovechkin is on the ice this morning and in a red jersey, which could mean he’s ready to return after a six-game absence and reclaim his spot on the top line. The Caps are skating at the practice rink inside Prudential Center (Metallica concerts last night and tonight at MSG). It is a fine-looking rink.

The Caps went 4-2 without Ovechkin, but wins over Florida (twice), Minnesota and the N.Y. Islanders (in a shootout) and two losses (including a blowout) against New Jersey means … well, it means we probably didn’t learn as much as we thought we had regarding this team without its franchise player. If he does play tomorrow, on national TV at Madison Square Garden is a pretty fitting stage.

Milan Jurcina and Boyd Gordon are not on the ice for practice. Here are the forward lines:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Clark
Laich-Morrison-Semin
Fleischmann-Perreault-Bradley
Laing-Steckel-Fehr

Doesn’t look like Semin’s latest game-altering gaffe is going to earn him any (on-ice, at least) punishment. Also, looks like Eric Fehr has “earned” a demotion.

That’s it for now. I’ll check in from the train on my way back to NYC later. My computer has failed me, so I apologize if these updates (which are being typed on my blackberry and sent to an editor to be posted) aren’t as timely as normal.
