Biden welcomes Obama to his home state

← return to Inauguration Blog

When President-elect Barack Obama’s train arrived in Wilmington, Vice President-elect Joe Biden stepped up and knocked on the door. He waved and pointed at old friends gathered to see him off.

When the door opened and the incoming president and first lady came outside, Mr. Biden opened his arms to Michelle Obama, who turned 45 today, and boomed, “Happy birthday, kid!”

Mr. Obama and his vice president-elect shook hands, and then hugged.

Jill Biden kissed Mr. Obama on the cheek, her breath visible in the frigid temperature.

Earlier during the slow roll through small towns, Mr. Obama did not wear his coat as he waved at citizens from the train car.
