D.C. mayor expects statehood

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, fighting an uphill battle to win a second term, said Wednesday he’s confident that the Obama administration and the new Congress that will be elected this November will approve statehood for the district.

During a debate Wednesday with his mayoral opponent, D.C. City Council Chairman Vincent Gray, Fenty said, “It will get done.”

It’s a bold prediction, considering the way the coming election is shaping up.

Polls across the country indicate that Republicans — traditionally cool to the idea of giving the overwhelmingly Democratic city a vote in Congress — are expected to pick up seats in the Senate and the House.
