Popular conservative radio host Michael Savage is poised to offer Newt Gingrich $1 million to drop out of the Republican presidential nomination contest, warning that the former House Speaker is unelectable and if he becomes the party’s nominee he will come off as a “fat, old, white man” on his way to losing the 2012 election to President Obama.
Mr. Savage, host of “The Savage Nation” program, said in a post on his website that the GOP contest has boiled down to a race between Mr. Gingrich and Mitt Romney, and Mr. Savage said the former Massachusetts governor offers the party the best bet of knocking Mr. Obama off in a head-to-head general election matchup.
“Newt Gingrich is unelectable,” he wrote on his website (www.michaelsavage.wnd.com) “Mitt Romney is the only candidate with a candidate with a chance of defeating Barack Obama, and there is nothing more important than that for future health, safety and security of the United States of America. Therefore, I am offering Newt Gingrich one million dollars to drop out of the presidential race for the sake of the nation.”
He gave the Georgia Republican 72 hours to accept the offer, which he plans to make on his radio show Monday.
Mr. Savage said Mr. Gingrich carries too much baggage as a candidate, that he failed to deliver on the Contract with America, cut a 2008 television ad with Nancy Pelosi “promoting the false theory of global warming” and took money to work on behalf of federal mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which he describes as “two of the most corrupt financial institutions in history.”
“He’s cheated on two wives and left both of them while they were both seriously ill, which will destroy his chances among female voters,” he said in the post, where he also took aim at his description of the Republican plan to reform Medicare as ‘right wing social engineering’ and warned he’d lose the image battle against Mr. Obama.
“In a presidential debate against Obama, regardless of how well he does, on television, he will come off badly compared to Obama and look like nothing more than what he is: a fat, old, white man,” said Mr. Savage.
