President Obama will greet U.S. troops returning from Iraq at Fort Bragg, N.C., on Wednesday to mark the end of the war, the White House has announced.

“As we definitively end America’s war in Iraq this month, the president wanted to speak directly to the troops at Ft. Bragg and to members of the Armed Forces and their families everywhere,” the White House press secretary’s office said in a statement.

“The president will speak about the enormous sacrifices and achievements of the brave Americans who served in the Iraq War, and he will speak about the extraordinary milestone of bringing the war in Iraq to an end.”

Mr. Obama, who campaigned in 2008 on a promise to end the war, will be accompanied at Fort Bragg by first lady Michelle Obama.

The administration decided to withdraw all U.S. troops by the end of this year after being unable to reach an agreement with the Iraqi government on an extension of immunity for U.S. military personnel.
