Pelosi calls for investigation of Oregon Dem Wu

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has asked the chamber’s ethics panel to investigate new charges that fellow Democrat Rep. David Wu had “inappropriate activities” with an 18-year-old woman.

The Californian made her request in a letter dated Monday to House Ethics Committee Chairman Jo Bonner, Alabama Republican, and the panel’s senior Democrat, Rep. Linda T. Sanchez, California Democrat.

An 18-year-old woman has accused Mr. Wu, a seventh-term congressman from Portland, of having an “unwanted sexual encounter” with him.

Mr. Wu has commented little on the allegations. In a brief statement Friday he called the situation “very serious” and that he had “absolutely no desire to bring unwanted publicity, attention or stress to a young woman and her family.”

The Oregonian newspaper, citing an unidentified senior Democratic official, said Mr. Wu didn’t plan on resigning, but would complete his term and retire at the end of 2012.
