Former Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehlich Jr. has joined the Washington offices of King & Spalding, an Atlanta-based international law firm.

Mr. Ehrlich, a Republican who lost a re-election bid last fall to Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, will serve as senior counsel in the firm’s government advocacy and public policy practice.

Mr. Ehrlich was Maryland’s first Republican governor in more than three decades, serving from 2002 to 2006 after eight years in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“I am excited to join Wick [Sollers, managing partner of the firm’s Washington office,] and his team,” Mr. Ehrlich said in a statement. “King & Spalding has added a number of very talented lawyers and practice groups to the Washington office in the past few years, and I am pleased to be part of such a dynamic firm. I particularly look forward to helping grow the firm’s government advocacy and public policy practice.”
