Even in these times of high gas prices, when the president goes somewhere by motorcade, he goes in force. And that’s even more true when he’s going with other world leaders.

On Thursday, the president and Irish prime minister drove the 16 blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to the Capitol in one of the bigger motorcades — 20 official vehicles, accompanied by 11 police motorcycles and seven police cars. That’s in addition to the police that weren’t part of the motorcade, but helped block off traffic on cross streets.
