McCotter drops out

Bowing to the realities of a campaign that never got off the ground, Rep. Thad McCotter told supporters Thursday he is ending his bid for the Republican presidential nomination and endorsing Mitt Romney.

Mr. McCotter joined the race less than three months ago, but failed to gain traction at last month’s straw poll in Ames, Iowa, and was denied the national stage of being included in the network-run debates.

In an email to supporters, Mr. McCotter called for unity between tea party supporters and the Republican Party, and said that means backing Mr. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who is battling for the GOP’s nomination.

“We must unite behind the candidate best capable of defeating Barack Obama on Nov. 6, 2012,” he said. “Mitt Romney is that candidate.”

Mr. McCotter said he will now seek re-election for his House seat.
