Delegates driving to the Republican National Convention in Tampa next week will be greeted with a downtown billboard reminding them they’re visiting a Democratic city.

The billboard, which went up this week on Interstate 275 near downtown, says; “Welcome to Tampa! Where the mayor and all city council members are Democrats. Enjoy your visit!”

The sign was paid for by Ruth’s List Florida, a group dedicated to helping elect women to public office who support abortion rights, and can be seen on the group’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/RuthsListFlorida.

Officially Tampa’s elected officials are nonpartisan, though all are registered Democrats. Mayor Bob Buckhorn is supporting President Obama’s re-election bid, though he says he’ll refraining from partisan politics until after the four-day Republican convention concludes Aug. 30.
