Despite alleged rift, Obama appoints Caroline Kennedy to board

Whether or not Caroline Kennedy ever soured on President Obama, the president appointed her Friday to serve on the board of trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, the venue that honors her father.

The White House announced her appointment along with nine others who will serve on the Kennedy Center’s board. Since 2003, Caroline Kennedy has hosted the annual “Kennedy Center Honors” program.

Caroline Kennedy and her late uncle, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, were early supporters of Mr. Obama’s presidential bid in 2008. But a book published in May, The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House by Edward Klein, quoted an unnamed “member of the Kennedy clan” as saying Ms. Kennedy was no longer enamored with the president.

“I can’t stand to hear his voice anymore,” she supposedly said, according to the book. “He’s a liar and worse.”

She hasn’t confirmed or denied the book passage, but Ms. Kennedy did campaign for the president in New Hampshire this summer.
