A group of liberal Catholics plans to deliver 120 pounds of coal to House Republicans on Friday, accusing them of having ruined Christmas by leaving without getting a deal done to avoid the “fiscal cliff.”

“With a large ‘naughty’ list, Santa will be passing out hundreds of pounds of coal to the members who have refused to allow a vote to come to the House floor on middle class tax cuts,” said Catholics United, which advocates on the Catholic Church’s more liberal social justice teachings.

House Speaker John A. Boehner sent the House home for Christmas late Thursday after his fellow Republicans rejected his fiscal cliff Plan B, which would have had the House vote to pass new spending cuts to replace the $110 billion in automatic cuts that were part of last year’s debt deal, and to pass a bill that would halt tax increases for everyone but those making more than $1 million a year.
