Pelosi denies she has Gingrich secret

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has dismissed suggestions she knows something that could derail Newt Gingrich’s bid for the Republican presidential nomination, saying her belief he won’t win is based on “instinct.”

During an interview with CNN that aired Tuesday, the California Democrat said a Gingrich presidency “will never happen.” When asked why, she said, “There’s something I know.”

But Mrs. Pelosi on Thursday said it’s wrong to infer she has dirt on the former House Republican speaker, saying what she knows about Mr. Gingrich is “a matter of public record.”

“On a separate subject I was saying I know he’ll never be president, and they sort of combined the two things,” Mrs. Pelosi told reporters at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Hotel in Cambridge, Md., where House Democrats are gathered for their annual strategy retreat.

“Why do I know he’ll never be president? Just an instinct I have. So it’s all about the public record, and that is what I have said over and over again.”

Mrs. Pelosi, herself a former House speaker who served several years in the House with Mr. Gingrich, declined to say what specifically she was inferring to in Mr. Gingrich’s public record.

“They’ll just have to read the public record. I’m not here to give a road map to the public record,” she said.
