Ever the historian, Newt Gingrich dropped a little marijuana wisdom in New Hampshire on Wednesday, telling an audience member that two of the Founding Fathers of the United States wouldn’t like the idea of allowing New Hampshire residents to legally grow their own pot.

“I think Jefferson or George Washington would have rather strongly discouraged you from growing marijuana, and their techniques of dealing with it would have been more violent,” he said, in response to a question.

Mr. Gingrich is campaigning in New Hampshire, where he’s hoping for a strong showing in the state’s primary on Tuesday. He finished fourth in the Iowa caucuses on Tuesday.
