Republican U.S. Senate candidate George Allen on Wednesday released the third television ad of his “Virginia Voices” summer advertising campaign in Virginia, all of which feature women Mr. Allen knows well speaking favorably of the former governor and U.S. senator.
The ad, titled “Kay,” features Kay Coles James, former Secretary of Health and Human Resources and a wife, mother and grandmother.
“When George Allen believes in something, he doesn’t stop working until it becomes a reality,” Ms. James said.
“Welfare reform was far from easy and most people believed it to be impossible. But not George Allen. As governor, he working diligently across party lines to help many Virginians know the dignity of self-sufficiency through work. George Allen is exactly the kind of leader Virginians need in the U.S. Senate.”
The ad follows up on two others — one features Dorothy Jaeckle, vice chairwoman of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors, and the other one has Betsy Beamer, former Secretary of the Commonwealth under Mr. Allen. The new spot will be added into a rotation that will run statewide throughout the summer. The buy is a little less than $1 million.
Mr. Allen is running against Democrat Tim Kaine, also a former Virginia governor, whose campaign immediately responded.
“It’s not surprising that George Allen would be endorsed by his own political appointees,” said Kaine spokeswoman Lily Adams. “But Virginia voters need look no further than George Allen’s last Senate term, where he opposed major bipartisan initiatives and compromise, to know what kind of senator George Allen would be if he wins reelection.”
