The top party leaders in the House took the U.S. Olympic team to task on Thursday over reports it will wear Chinese-made uniforms at the Summer Games that begin late this month in London.
The U.S. Olympians “represent the very best, and they’re so excellent. It’s all so beautiful. And they should be wearing uniforms that are made in America,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelsoi, California Democrat, told reporters.
House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, when asked at a news event to comment on the American Olympians wearing threads not made in U.S., responded, “You’d think they know better.”
ABC News reported Wednesday that the Ralph Lauren-designed navy blue blazers that U.S. Olympians will wear during the opening ceremonies of the games were made in China. The network also reported that every item Americans athletes will don for the festivities — including berets, neckties, scarfs and shoes — will carry an overseas label.
