Sen. Claire McCaskill stockpiled $2.6 million from April to June, raising more campaign funds than any other Missouri Senate candidate has in the second quarter of an election year.
The first-term Democrat is preparing to defend her seat in November in what’s likely to be a tight race, no matter which of the three Republicans vying to unseat her wins the August primary.
With her latest fundraising results, Mrs. McCaskill had more than $3.6 million cash in the bank at the end of June, her campaign told the Springfield News-Leader on Wednesday. She already has spent $3 million to buy ad time closer to the election, the newspaper reported.
U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman and businessman John Brunner haven’t yet released their second-quarter fundraising figures, which are due to the Federal Election Commission on Sunday.
Polls indicate that each of the Republicans could beat Mrs. McCaskill in a head-to-head matchup.
