Sen. Bill Nelson has asked Florida television stations to immediately stop airing an attack ad against him by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce he said spreads “false and misleading” information.

The chamber last week announced an ad campaign targeting the Florida Democrat and other members of Congress who voted for President Obama’s 2010 health-care bill. The anti-Nelson advertisement says the law “could” cause 20 million people to lose employer-paid health care coverage and that “seniors will see $500 billion in Medicare cuts.”

Mr. Nelson, through an attorney, sent a letter Monday to television stations across the Sunshine State asking that the ad be pulled immediately “to protect the public from the spread of false information and deliberate deception.”

FactCheck.org, a non-partisan political fact-checking service affiliated with the Annenberg Public Policy Center, also called the ad misleading, while PolitiFact, a project operated by the Tampa Bay Times, said the ad’s claim the legislation would cut $500 billion from Medicare was “false.”

The chamber also targeted former Rep. Alan Grayson, Florida Democrat, in a similar ad.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee shot back at Mr. Nelson, saying in an email to reporters that “on multiple occasions in 2009, Bill Nelson admitted that thousands of Florida seniors would be harmed under ObamaCare’s cuts to Medicare, yet when push came to shove he voted for them anyway.”

Mr. Nelson is running for re-election this year.
