Minutes after President Obama told ABC he now supports gay marriage, Democrats were already campaigning on the issue.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi headlined an email from House Democrats’ campaign arm asking supporters to sign a petition backing the president’s decision, calling it “a proud moment.”
In her email she said she has long supported allowing gay men and lesbians to marry each other, and said she was trying to rally support to defend against an expected backlash.
“There will undoubtedly be opposition. At this historic moment, we must show that the American people support extending the rights and responsibilities of marriage to LGBT citizens,” she said.
