Ann Romney: Mitt is 'cheap' and claims cold showers 'not that bad'

In the wake of President Obama’s much-ballyhooed appearances on “Late Show With David Letterman” and “The View,” Ann Romney made her first appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” on Tuesday night and effusively “praised” her husband’s, ahem, frugality.

“We love Costco,” she told host Jay Leno of the Romneys’ affinity for the wholesale behemoth. “I don’t know how much of an endorsement is that — we love Costco.”

When asked whether her husband was “frugal” or “cheap,” Mrs. Romney said, “Cheap” — almost without hesitation.

“Do you want to know what he does when we leave the house?” she said. “He turns off the hot water heater. Do you know what he does when he comes back [to] the house? He forgets to turn the hot water heater back on. He says, ‘Cold showers — they’re not that bad.’ Really.”

Mrs. Romney also said she made a video for him four years ago to make known her distaste for campaigning.

“For years ago, I made a videotape,” she said. “I looked in the camera, and I said: ‘Mitt, this is for you, sweetheart. I’m never doing this again.’ And I showed it to him, and he looked at it, and he said, ‘You know, Ann, you say that after every pregnancy.’”

The Romneys have five sons.
