Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Tennessee Republican, will lead a House delegation to London for the funeral of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, according to House Speaker John A. Boehner.
Mrs. Thatcher’s death last week prompted a flurry of praise from conservatives in Congress. In formal statements, they touted her work with President Reagan sparking the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.
“Margaret Thatcher was one of the greatest champions freedom has ever known, and her funeral gives Americans and friends around the world an opportunity to pay final respects,” Mr. Boehner said Monday.
The delegation will also include Republican Reps. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and George Holding of North Carolina.
Mr. Boehner has directed the delegation to fly on commercial planes instead of military ones for the Wednesday funeral, as part of a blanket policy the speaker implemented with the sequestration spending cuts in effect.
