Luckily for Rep. Scott DesJarlais, the legal voting age is 18.

The 11-year-old girl who asked the Tennessee Republican whether her father, an illegal immigrant, needs to be deported said Tuesday the congressman’s response made her “mad and sad.”

“I was hoping he would say something that was more helpful. … I was kind of mad at him,” said Josie Molina, who over the weekend confronted Mr. DesJarlais about immigration reform. Josie appeared alongside her mother, Megan Macaraeg, organizing director with the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, on MSNBC Tuesday morning.

Mr. DesJarlais drew cheers from the crowd when he told Josie that her father broke the law by coming to the country illegally, and that the U.S. must adhere to its immigration rules.

In a statement to MSNBC on Tuesday, Ms. DesJarlais reiterated that “we simply cannot condone individuals coming here illegally.”

If she gets the chance to speak to the congressman again, Josie says she’d ask him “to change his mind.”
