The choice of Ben Affleck to play Batman on the silver screen has drawn scorn from many fans of the legendary comic book hero, but the Caped Crusader’s biggest backer on Capitol Hill believes he’s a fine selection for the role.

“Ben’s a great pick for Batman and a New Englander to boot. I guess that means I’m out of the running,” tweeted Sen. Patrick Leahy, Vermont Democrat and a noted Batman enthusiast.

Mr. Affleck, who grew up in Massachusetts, will portray Batman — and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne — in the upcoming Batman/Superman film, planned for release in 2015. He replaces Christian Bale, who helped revitalize the Batman movie franchise with 2005’s “Batman Begins” and two wildly successful sequels.

Mr. Leahy has had brief cameo appearances in three Batman films. Most notably, he confronted the villainous Joker in 2008’s “The Dark Knight.”
