Biden to Japanese businesswomen: 'Do your husbands like you working full-time?'

While touring a Japanese Internet company Tuesday, Vice President Joseph R. Biden asked a group of women, “Do your husbands like you working full-time?”

Mr. Biden asked the question while sitting with five women in the DeNa cafeteria in Tokyo. Their responses couldn’t all be heard by reporters.

“Can anyone work from home?” Mr. Biden asked. One woman replied, “Yes, under certain conditions.”

The vice president visited the company with the new U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, to promote more women in the Japanese workforce. Japanese industries have lagged in hiring women.

Later, Mr. Biden said the U.S. needs to improve along with Japan at creating equal opportunities for women.

“We in America have a long way to go as well,” Mr. Biden said. “But there’s an inevitability to this march. There’s not a single thing that a man can do that a woman cannot do. And until we begin to face up to that, we’re going to be having an incredible amount of wasting assets out there.”
