The National Rifle Association is out with a new ad Thursday taking President Obama and others to task over gun control, specifically targeting a proposed ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines.

“So, they want to ban high-capacity magazines,” a narrator says in the spot. “Not for the security that surrounds the president, Congress, Mayor Bloomberg, rock stars, CEOs, and wealthy big shots.”

The ad then turns to an argument the group has consistently used to argue against universal background checks on all gun purchases: tighter laws will only be ignored by criminals and create more red tape for law-abiding gun owners.

“And the madmen, drug cartels, and home-invading killers will still get them from the same market that sells drugs, stolen cars and everything else that criminals buy,” the narrator says, as a rolled-up $20 bill sucks up a white powdery substance and a masked gunman stands half-turned toward the camera. “It’s just the rest of us, the law-abiding average people, who will have to defend our families with limited capacity magazines. Welcome to Barack Obama’s middle class.”

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre is scheduled to respond Thursday afternoon to the State of the Union address, in which Mr. Obama repeatedly said victims of recent shooting sprees “deserve a vote” from Congress on his gun control measures, which also include a ban on military-style, semiautomatic weapons.
