President Obama could name foreign policy adviser Denis McDonough his next chief of staff by the end of the week, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.
The key job opened up last week when Mr. Obama nominated his current chief of staff, Jack Lew, to replace Timothy F. Geithner as Treasury secretary. Mr. McDonough would be the president’s fifth chief of staff.
In the White House, Mr. McDonough has worked as communications director for the National Security Council and as the chief of staff to National Security Adviser Tom Donilon. On Capitol Hill, he served as foreign policy adviser in Mr. Obama’s Senate office and as foreign policy adviser to former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, South Dakota Democrat.
It would be the fifth nomination in a row of a white male for key positions in the president’s second term, as Mr. Obama has come under fire from liberal supporters for a lack of diversity in his appointees.
