President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama congratulated the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Monday on the “joyous occasion” of the birth of their first child, a son and heir to the British throne.

“We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings,” the Obamas said in a statement.

“The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations,” they said. “Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince.”

The duchess, the former Kate Middleton, gave birth to the still-unnamed son, now third in line to the throne, earlier in the day.
