Republican candidate Gabriel Gomez said he’s headed for victory in Tuesday’s special election to fill Secretary of State John F. Kerry’s vacated Senate seat from Massachusetts, despite recent polls showing he trails his Democratic rival by a significant margin.
“We can definitely win … I’m confident,” Mr. Gomez, a former Navy SEAL, told “Fox News Sunday.”
Yet Mr. Gomez lags behind Rep. Edward J. Markey, Massachusetts Democrat, by 8 percentage points with just 48 hours to go before voters render their verdict, according to a new poll released late Saturday by The Republican/MassLive.com in partnership with CBS 3 Springfield.
Mr. Gomez touted his Navy resume on the program and said he will not be a rubber stamp for broad Republican positions in the Senate.
He told Fox News he would have voted in favor of expanded background checks on gun sales and supports the comprehensive immigration bill up for debate in the chamber. He said that, if elected, he would change the “Gang of Eight” that is pushing the immigration bill into a “Gang of Nine.”
